- Description:
- Autographed photographic portrait of Abraham Lincoln that was taken on May 20, 1860 in Springfield, Illinois, by William Marsh. The note on the reverse of the photograph says that the portrait was presented to Benjamin F. Prescott on March 4, 1860, though that would have been impossible given the portrait was not yet made. \n The story on the photograph is that President Lincoln presented the portrait to Prescott, when he visited New Hampshire in March of 1860, while he son, Robert Todd Lincoln, was attending Phillips Exeter Academy. During his trip to New Hampshire, Lincoln made speeches in Manchester, Concord, Exeter, and Portsmouth. Lincoln did make that trip but would not have given this portrait at the time.
