- Description:
- Glass plate negative, 4"x5", inscription on envelope, "AC 472 Train Depot (people in front)" Image depicts the Contoocook Railroad Depot, in Contoocook Village. It is a 1 1/2 story wooden building in front of railroad tracks with 2 windows, a door, two windows, another door, and one more window in front. On the side are four windows - two over two. There is a narrow wooden platform that wraps around the building. A brick chimney as well as a metal vent pipe extend above the roofline. There is a sign above one door reading, "American Express Co." and a man wearing coveralls and jacket is standing, leaning on the doorframe. On the front corner is a shingle reading, "Western Union Telegraph." At the opposite front corner is a white horse hitched to a wagon with some sort of covering on him, and a man working with his back to the photograph. Next to them, against the front of the building, are two wooden barrels and other items. The working man is about 10 feet from a small shed with a large door (closed) that is attached to a 3 story Mansard-roofed building with a 2 story addition in back. On the other side of the depot, where the track is visible, there is a rail cart on the track with two boxes. Trees behind the track are leafless. The sun is at an angle so that the roof overhang shows the front of the depot half covered in shade. In the foreground of the photo is a large telegraph pole with two arms extending out at the top.
