Negative, glass-plate

Title:
Davis House
Date:
1900-1950
Dimensions:
Print Size: 4in x 5in
Description:
Glass plate negative, 4"x5", inscription on envelope, "AC 27 W.S. Davis 1965: Kimball Nursing Home." Image depicts a large, architecturally busy, Victorian home. There are trees and shrubs in front and along the side that surround the house, and vines climbing along the front of the home nearly obscuring it from view. The first floor has a porch with a turned column and an ornate white wooden railing of small arches and hanging pendants that is barely visible. The second floor also has a covered porch above the first, and again, is covered in vines. The third floor is in the hip roof, with large gables on either side and two small gabled windows (with decorative moldings) in the front that have square stained glass panels in the top halves. These windows flank a covered sleeping porch that has an ornamental railing hanging down from the top and wraps around the porch (the vines are covering about a third of this as well). This porch is the base for a large square turret that continues up another level with a double window in front and two single windows on each side. Above this is an octagonal spire with small gothic windows on four sides. There is a metal rod extending from the peak. There is a small driveway alongside the house.
Provenance:
From the collection of Leown Kelley (1875-1958), photographer.
The Davis house is located on Main St., Contoocook. It was built for family members of Walter Scott Davis (1834-1899). W. S. Davis and sons were responsible for building major mills in Hopkinton, including the Davis Paper Mills in West Hopkinton and Kingsbury Davis in Contoocook. The house was converted into a Nursing Home circa 1960s (Kimball Nursing Home) and later into an apartment building (1990s-present, 2014).
