Title:
Merchants' Row
Date:
1860-1880
Dimensions:
Film Size: 8 x 10
Description:
View of Merchants' Row on the left, the Lumber Yard between Lower Canal and Upper Canal with Langdon Mill # 2 Mill behind the lumber yard. Amoskeag Falls Covered Bridge is in the background on the left side as is the Merrimack River. On the other side of the Upper Canal is Canal Street where the Manchester Locomotive Works is located at the corner of Canal and Hollis Street (not shown). The date of the photograph is unknown, what is known is that it is a copy photo taken sometime after 1880 when the dry plate negative was in use. The Langdon Mill was built in 1860 and the site where the lumber yard is The Amory Mill was built in 1880. Another clue to dating the image is that there are one or two buildings to the left of Merchants' Row which may be on the Island.
