- Title:
- Cobbs' Radio and Television Store
- Date:
- 1950-1968
- Description:
- Cobbs' Raido Television store, 149-151 Deer Street at the corner of Depot Avenue.
During a portion of the 20th century, the building was owned by the Paganelli family (as was the property to the right, see P26_043), and this building on the street was most likely the outbuilding formerly located on the rear of the property, the site of a former saloon and then Atlantic Motor Express Inc., destroyed c.1938. Between 1947-1950, Thomas P. Cobbs opened Cobbs' Radio Television Service. Cobbs was also the president for the Portsmouth Chapter of the NAACP. He and his wife Gretchen also lived at this address until urban renewal forced them out in 1968.
Image 1: To the left is the parking lot and a portion of the Boston Maine Railroad depot complex at 157 Deer Street. A train can bee seen stopped at the station, and the B M water tank is on the right.
Image 2: The white building was part of 157 Deer Street complex, which included the Boston Maine passenger station, B M freight depot, B M Transportation Co., as well as throughout the years a restaurant and other businesses.
Image 3: In the distant left of Cobbs' Radio Television Store is the Franklin Pierce Volunteer Fireman's Association Bulding on Maplewood Avenue. When Maplewood Avenue was extended through the North End as part of the Vaughan Street Urban Renewal, the Franklin Pierce Volunteer Fireman's Building was one of the first buildings demolished since it was owned by the city of Portsmouth. - Subjects:
