Date:
1920-1950
Dimensions:
Print Size: 3 x 2
Description:
This black and white photograph depicts a Shaker sister petting two horses inside a pasture. The horse on the right is probably a thoroughbred, the horse on the left may be Mollie the Horse. Both horses are dark, probably dark bay or black. Both horses appear to be greying at their faces (or else they are extremely shiny), suggesting they are in their late teens or twenties. The horse on the right has a stripe/narrow blaze that starts at his eyes. He is fairly big, probably at least 16 hands, depending on the sister's height. They stand in an enclosure with a wooden fence. The sister wears a bonnet, neck cape, glasses, and a light Shaker dress.
Provenance:
The album is labeled "Photographs" and measures 7 x 10". The name "Blanche L. Gardner" is stamped just inside the cover. Pages are unnumbered. The album is in fairly good condition; several pages are torn, but the binding is intact. Photographs are mounted with black paper corners, and most are easily removable. The album was found in the Trustees Building, and was given to Archives by Eldress Bertha Lindsay.

There are 200 b & w images on 50 pages; there is also 1 small [2 3/8 x 3 1/2"] post card. Most of the photographs measure 2 1/2 x 3 1/2".

Most of the images are of Canterbury. Subjects include pets; the "Shelter"; Canterbury Sisters; the construction of the Steel Garage [4 images]; theatrical productions, Point Comfort; a picnic; apples being sorted; Sisters playing in the snow.
