Title:
"Rebecca Hathaway shown listing a Shaker chair."
Date:
1940-1950
Dimensions:
Print Size: 2.125 x 3
Description:
This black and white photograph depicts Rebecca Hathaway in the back room of the Syrup Shop (floor 1), weaving a chair seat with cloth tape. A large counter is at back, which holds bottles, a glass dish, gingham cloth or a specific textile cover, a hammer, an upright telephone, and alarm clock. Spring shades are in the windows. Dried flowers hang from the ceiling. A shelf positioned between the two windows holds a Gothic-style mantle clock. Framed prints hang on the walls. Dowels are hooked across each window and small cut-out ornaments are strung from them (possibly ornaments such as 1987.2). Rebecca sits in a Windsor-style chair and lists a Canterbury-made ladderback rocking chair with 'suicide rockers'. She wears eyeglasses, a cap, and a printed floral dress with matching bertha. She holds a hammer in her left hand (indicating she was left-handed) and chair tape in her right hand.

"Sister Rebecca Hathaway, shown re-listing a Shaker chair. These chairs were manufactured around 1885. Many different types were made, both in Canterbury and Mt. Lebanon. The chair industry at East Canterbury was instigated by Father Job Bishop in the early part of the eighteenth century. The back posts terminated in various shaped finials; the particular style of Canterbury, being the pineapple finial. On many straight-backed chairs a novel invention was used, called a "Boot". These boots were inserted into the back legs with a leather thong, enabling the user to tip backward, without tipping over or marring the floor"
